Why the card jams — and why forcing it makes things worse
It's a spring latch, and springs jam
The DC-1 uses a push-push micro-SD slot: press the card in, a spring catch releases it and pops it out. Road grit, a slightly bent card, or a card pushed in fractionally off-square is enough to stop the catch releasing. The card is then held by the mechanism, not stuck by dirt — which is why pulling at it rarely works and often does damage.
Half-inserted cards disappear inside
If a card is pushed past the slot rather than into it, it can drop into the body of the camera. From outside it looks like the card has vanished. It hasn't — it's loose inside the shell, and it comes out safely once the camera is opened properly.
Tweezers are what turn a small job into a big one
The contacts inside the slot are thin gold-plated fingers. Gripping a stuck card with metal tweezers and pulling bends those fingers or tears the slot off its solder pads. At that point you're not paying for a card removal any more — you're paying for a slot to be re-soldered, if the pads survived.
What to do before you send it
- Try one firm, square push. A push-push latch sometimes needs a proper press to release. One attempt — if it doesn't pop, stop.
- Don't use tweezers, pliers or a knife. This is the single most common way a £19.99 job becomes a board repair.
- Note whether the camera still sees a card. If it does, the card is seated but the latch has jammed. If it doesn't, the card may have dropped inside — tell us either way.
- Send the camera, not just a description. This one is always quicker to fix than to diagnose remotely — it's usually the cheapest and fastest repair we do.
