What actually goes wrong with the charging port
A USB socket is a mechanical part, on any device
Inside the camera the USB socket is soldered flat to the circuit board, with a handful of tiny contacts and two or four metal legs holding it down. Every time you plug in you push against those solder joints. Do that daily for a couple of years — often with cold hands, in a hurry, at an angle — and the joints eventually fatigue and crack. That's why the fault usually appears gradually: first it charges only at a certain angle, then only if you prop the cable, then not at all.
Grit and damp in an open port
The charging port has a cover for a reason. Left open — after a charge, or if the bung has perished with age — fine road grit works into the socket and grinds the contacts, and road spray leaves moisture that corrodes them. Corrosion shows up as intermittent charging that gets worse over weeks, and often a green or white residue you can see with a torch. Once contacts are corroded, cleaning is a temporary fix at best — the plating has gone.
Vibration is the part people forget
Bolted to a helmet or handlebar, the camera is shaken constantly. Vibration is what turns a hairline crack in a solder joint into a broken connection. It's also why a camera can work perfectly on the bench and fail as soon as it's back on the bike — the fault only opens up under movement. If you've been told 'no fault found' elsewhere, that's very often what happened.
How to tell it's the port and not the cable or charger
- Try a different cable and plug first. Cables fail far more often than ports, and it costs you nothing to rule out. If another cable charges it properly, you've saved a repair.
- Look into the socket with a bright light. Packed grit or fluff is common and can sometimes be teased out with a wooden toothpick — never anything metal, which shorts the contacts.
- Wiggle test. If charging starts and stops as you move the cable, that's a port or solder-joint fault, not a battery or charger problem.
- Does it charge from a computer but not a plug, or vice versa? That points at specific pins in the socket rather than the whole port — still a port repair, but worth telling us as it helps the diagnosis.

Will I lose my footage?
No — a charging port repair doesn't touch the SD card or your recordings. Take the card out before you send it if you'd rather keep it with you.
Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?
Almost always. A port repair is a fraction of the cost of a new camera, and the rest of the unit is usually in perfect order.
