Techalogic Power Button Repair

Power button gone dead, mushy, or needing a proper press before the camera wakes? The internal switch wears out with use — and on a helmet camera you're pressing it with gloves on, hard, in the cold. We fit a new internal switch and test the action.

What's failing inside the power button

It's a tiny switch with a metal dome inside

Behind the rubber button on the case sits a surface-mount tactile switch soldered to the board. Inside it is a thin metal dome that clicks down to make contact. Press it enough thousand times — on, off, start recording, stop — and the dome loses its snap. First you notice the click has gone soft, then you need a firmer press, then it takes two or three goes.

Gloves and cold make you press harder, which speeds it up

On a helmet or bike camera you're operating the button with gloves on, often without looking. That means pressing harder than the switch was designed for, which shortens its life considerably compared to the same switch in a device used bare-handed indoors.

An ageing seal can let damp reach the contacts

Rubber seals harden over years of sun, cold and cleaning products, and a knock or a drop can unseat one. If damp then reaches the switch it corrodes the contacts — which shows up as a button that works intermittently, sticks, or triggers by itself. A camera that stops recording without being touched is usually a tired switch rather than a software fault.

How to tell the switch has gone

  • Compare the feel to a new one. A healthy tactile switch gives a definite click. Soft, mushy or silent means the dome has collapsed.
  • Count the attempts. Needing two or three presses, or a much harder press than it used to take, is the classic worn-switch pattern.
  • Does it ever trigger on its own? Self-starting or self-stopping usually means moisture or corrosion in the switch, not a firmware problem.
  • Does it respond at all on USB power? If the camera is completely dead on power too, the fault may not be the button — tell us and we'll check the board first.
Please don’t: Don't press harder and harder to force a response. Once the dome has failed, extra force only risks cracking the switch off its solder pads or pushing the button assembly through the case seal — which lets water in and creates a second, worse problem.

Questions

Is it definitely the button and not the board?
We check that first. If the camera has a different underlying fault we tell you before doing any work, and you're not charged for a repair that wouldn't fix it.

Will it feel like new afterwards?
Yes — a new tactile switch restores the proper positive click.

How long does it take?
Typically same-day or within two working days.
