Could it just be lint?
Often — turn it off and check the port with a light. Packed-in fluff is the usual culprit and a wooden toothpick often clears it. If it's clean and still faulty, the port needs replacing.
Is the port soldered?
On most devices, yes — it's board-level soldering work, which is why it takes a little longer than a screen.
